1 Thessalonians 5:23
Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify you completely; and may your whole spirit, soul, and body be preserved blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.
We see from the verse above that we are made up of three parts, a spirit, a soul and a body. Let’s look at what each part does.
- Spirit: The part of you that connects with God. This is the part of you that is reborn when you accept Jesus.
- Soul: Your mind will and emotions. This is the connecting part between your spirit and your body.
- Body: Your physical container. The part of you that you see when you look in the mirror.
So when we are born again, our spirits are reborn with the Spirit of God and we are a new creation in our spirit, which is our also our innermost part. Our spirits are made perfect in Jesus.
The Bible also talks about working out our salvation (Philippians 2:12) and being transformed by the renewing of our minds (Romans 12:2). How do we reconcile having to work out our salvation and transform ourselves if we are born again and a new creation already? The confusion exists because many people are not aware of having both a spirit and a soul. They combine the two into one part when in fact they are two separate parts. During our life on the earth, the born again believer is to renew his/her mind by changing all the wrong beliefs they have picked up in the world with the truths of the Word of God. In doing so, they will become more like Jesus every day and their soul which acts as a valve between their perfect spirit and their physical body (and the world around them) will allow the perfection in their spirit to shine through more and more.
Our physical bodies are tied to this physical world and will never understand spiritual things. Our bodies will always seek to follow the ways of the world as that is all they can understand. We are to bring our bodies into subjection (1 Corinthians 9;27). We can do this once we start to renew our minds and see the power and authority won for us by Jesus. We will one day get a resurrection body, a new body that is fully saved as the other parts have been saved.
3 John 1:2
Beloved, I pray that you may prosper in all things and be in health, just as your soul prospers.
We see from the verse above that there is a link between our general health and prosperity and the prosperity or well being of our souls. We should pay special attention to this as this is why many sincere believers miss out on all that God has for them.
