Jesus, the image of God’s person

Hebrews 1:1-4
God, who at various times and in various ways spoke in time past to the fathers by the prophets, has in these last days spoken to us by His Son, whom He has appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the worlds; who being the brightness of His glory and the express image of His person, and upholding all things by the word of His power, when He had by Himself purged our sins, sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high, having become so much better than the angels, as He has by inheritance obtained a more excellent name than they.

The Bible makes it clear that if we look at Jesus, we see who God is. We are not talking about Jesus’ physical appearance here, what the Bible means is that we see God’s nature and personality expressed perfectly in Jesus!

Colossians: 2:8-10
Beware lest anyone cheat you through philosophy and empty deceit, according to the tradition of men, according to the basic principles of the world, and not according to Christ. For in Him dwells all the fullness of the Godhead bodily; and you are complete in Him, who is the head of all principality and power.

Colossians 1:13-15
He has delivered us from the power of darkness and conveyed us into the kingdom of the Son of His love, in whom we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins. He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation.

John 14:8-10
Philip said to Him, “Lord, show us the Father, and it is sufficient for us.”Jesus said to him, “Have I been with you so long, and yet you have not known Me, Philip? He who has seen Me has seen the Father; so how can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? Do you not believe that I am in the Father, and the Father in Me? The words that I speak to you I do not speak on My own authority; but the Father who dwells in Me does the works.

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made. In Him was life, and the life was the light of men. And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it.

John 1:14
And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.

John 1:16-18
And of His fullness we have all received, and grace for grace. For the law was given through Moses, but grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.  No one has seen God at any time. The only begotten Son, who is in the bosom of the Father, He has declared Him.

The first four books in the New Testament, Matthew, Mark, Luke & John, also known as the four Gospels, show us Jesus interacting with people on a day to day basis. We see Jesus in various different situation dealing with different types of people. We should read these stories, paying careful attention to how Jesus acted and reacted. This will show us God’s true nature.

Some observations from the Gospels:

  • Jesus always healed everyone who came to Him
  • Jesus never condemned people, He only ever confronted the religious leaders over their hypocrisy
  • Jesus cared about the poor and the outcasts as well as the rest of society
  • Jesus always displayed mercy and never held people’s sins against them
  • Jesus always encouraged people to turn away from the sin that was destroying them
  • Jesus was gentle and compassionate
  • Jesus always expressed love wherever He went
  • Jesus demonstrated power over the natural world

There are many ideas floating around in the world today about who God is and what He is like. We don’t have to listen to people’s theories, we can see what God is truly like by studying the life of Jesus. God never changes, we can know Him and trust that He is good!
