A God of relationship not rules

John 1:12
But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name:

Galatians 3:26
For you are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus.

Romans 8:14
For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God.

John 15:15
No longer do I call you servants, for a servant does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all things that I heard from My Father I have made known to you.

God is a God of relationship and when He talks about us, it’s in the context of family. God sees us as His sons and daughters when we accept Jesus.

You may have heard the saying that “Christianity is not a religion, it’s a relationship with God”. Some people are confused by this because they do not understand what people mean when they say religion. In the context of this saying, people are defining religion as a set of actions and rituals that people perform in an attempt to be acceptable to their God/s.

The difference with Christianity is that God accepts and loves us up front. We can’t earn ourselves into His good graces, we are made right with God solely through accepting the forgiveness of our sin through Jesus. Nobody was ever justified by trying to obey a set of laws!

Romans 3:20
Therefore by the deeds of the law no flesh will be justified in His sight, for by the law is the knowledge of sin.

In Jesus we are sons and daughters of God and therefore we get everything that Jesus gets from day one!

Romans 8:15-17
For you did not receive the spirit of bondage again to fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption by whom we cry out, “Abba, Father.” The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs—heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him, that we may also be glorified together.

The Bible is clear that when we accept Jesus, then we become one with Him, His suffering and the death He died on the cross, get credited to us too. We symbolically enter into this through being water baptised after accepting Jesus as our Lord and Savior.

1 Corinthians 6:17
But he who is joined to the Lord is one spirit with Him.

The God of the Bible is a triune God. This means that while He is one God, He consist of three personalities, God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit. Even in this concept of three in one, we see the priority of relationship. The Bible tells us that God not only loves as an action but that He is love, it’s His very nature! This only makes sense in the context of the trinity and because we are in Christ, when God the Father looks at us He sees Jesus and His perfection. Our imperfection and sin He remembers no more!

As Christians let’s stop living out of an identity of servants or supplicants, we are sons and daughters, a part of the family. As sons/daughters, we do serve in the family business but serving is not our identity. If you think of yourself as a servant only and not a son/daughter, you will never be confident in the kingdom of God. A servant is only in the house as long as his employment lasts, if the job finishes he must leave. A son/daughter are members of the household forever!
