Most people who think of themselves as Christians agree that Jesus died for our sins and that we are forgiven through His sacrifice on the cross. The problem I see when I look around is that many people still feel guilty and condemned. Many people are trying to be good enough for God and some have given up altogether.
Are you a believer is Jesus? Have you confessed with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and do you believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead? Read the verses from Romans below:
Romans 10:8-13
But what does it say? “The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart” (that is, the word of faith which we preach): that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. For the Scripture says, “Whoever believes on Him will not be put to shame.” For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek, for the same Lord over all is rich to all who call upon Him. For “whoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.”
If we believe and confess as above, we are saved and righteous!
2 Corinthians 5:21
For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.
God Word is very clear, we are forgiven, our sins are taken away, we are made righteous and we are justified. All this is a result of the atonement of Jesus, His blood paid for everything, there was no part payment, it was paid in full!
John 19:30
So when Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, “It is finished!” And bowing His head, He gave up His spirit.
The word Jesus used for “it is finished” is recorded in Greek as “tetelestai”. This word was also written on financial receipts to mean “Paid In Full”. Jesus paid in full for our sins, we are totally free of them. God even goes as far as to say that He has forgotten them!
Hebrews 8:12
For I will be merciful to their unrighteousness, and their sins and their lawless deeds I will remember no more.”
So why do so many people still feel guilty? The short answer is they are not thinking according to the Word and wisdom of God but according to their own flesh and worldly understanding. This gives the devil an opening to lie to them and condemn them. They are not letting the Word of God define their lives and so their feelings take control. Beware of a heart that is not focused on the truths of God, it will condemn you even when God does not!
Proverbs 3:5-6
Trust in the Lord with all your heart, And lean not on your own understanding; In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He shall direct your paths.
1 John 3:20
For if our heart condemns us, God is greater than our heart, and knows all things.
Ephesians 4:18
having their understanding darkened, being alienated from the life of God, because of the ignorance that is in them, because of the blindness of their heart;
Romans 8:1-2
There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit. For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has made me free from the law of sin and death.
We are not guilty, Jesus took the punishment for sin in our place, it would be unjust for God to punish Jesus and still hold that same sin against us (which is why He doesn’t). The Bible tells us that we act as we see ourselves in our hearts (Proverbs 23:7). If we see ourselves as God sees us, righteous and justified, in effect, without sin, then we will act sin free. Sin free people are not entangled in sin, they are free and they are empowered to overcome any temptation that comes their way.
