Romans 8:1-2
There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit. For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has made me free from the law of sin and death.
Through the sin of Adam, death entered the world and ruled in it. We are able to rise above sin and death by receiving Jesus as our lord and savior and living in Him.
Romans 5:12-17
Therefore, just as through one man sin entered the world, and death through sin, and thus death spread to all men, because all sinned— (For until the law sin was in the world, but sin is not imputed when there is no law. Nevertheless death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over those who had not sinned according to the likeness of the transgression of Adam, who is a type of Him who was to come. But the free gift is not like the offense. For if by the one man’s offense many died, much more the grace of God and the gift by the grace of the one Man, Jesus Christ, abounded to many. And the gift is not like that which came through the one who sinned. For the judgment which came from one offense resulted in condemnation, but the free gift which came from many offenses resulted in justification. For if by the one man’s offense death reigned through the one, much more those who receive abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness will reign in life through the One, Jesus Christ.)
Galatians 2:20
I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.
Water baptism is symbolic of being crucified with Jesus, we died, were buried and raised again into a new life in Him.
Romans 6:1-9
What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin that grace may abound? Certainly not! How shall we who died to sin live any longer in it? Or do you not know that as many of us as were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into His death? Therefore we were buried with Him through baptism into death, that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. For if we have been united together in the likeness of His death, certainly we also shall be in the likeness of His resurrection, knowing this, that our old man was crucified with Him, that the body of sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves of sin. For he who has died has been freed from sin. Now if we died with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with Him, knowing that Christ, having been raised from the dead, dies no more. Death no longer has dominion over Him.
As born-again believers, we are no longer subject to sin. We are like an airplane that overcomes the law of gravity by using the laws of lift and thrust (and overcoming drag). The law of gravity does not cease to operate, it is just superseded by lift and thrust. Sin and death will be done away with for all time at the end when Jesus returns and until then, we are to walk according to the spirit and not according to the flesh. When we acknowledge all that Jesus did for us and live out of that truth we are walking by the Spirit. When we live out of our own strength and try to achieve our own righteousness, we are walking according to the flesh. While walking according to the Spirit, we are like an airplane, overcoming gravity through lift and thrust. When we walk according to the flesh, we are like an airplane that looses it’s wings and engine, gravity takes over to disastrous effect.
We overcome sin, by remaining focused on who we are in Jesus. We need to see ourselves as a new person, born-again into the family of God. When you received Jesus, the old you died and a new person was born. This new person has a new nature, they are no longer a sinner but a saint, free from the old sin nature. When you approach life with the understanding that the new you is not tempted by sin, you will act out of your new nature in everything you do. When sin comes knocking at your door, tell it the person it’s looking for is dead and that the new you is not interested in what it’s “selling”.
2 Corinthians 5:17
Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.
Colossians 3:9-10
Do not lie to one another, since you have put off the old man with his deeds, and have put on the new man who is renewed in knowledge according to the image of Him who created him,
Ephesians 4:20-24
But you have not so learned Christ, 21 if indeed you have heard Him and have been taught by Him, as the truth is in Jesus: that you put off, concerning your former conduct, the old man which grows corrupt according to the deceitful lusts, and be renewed in the spirit of your mind, and that you put on the new man which was created according to God, in true righteousness and holiness.
