We receive from God via either blessings or miracles. Blessings are a supernatural empowerment, favour or ability that every believer receives from God. Blessings are not things, things are a fruit of the blessing. A miracle is a supernatural suspension or superseding of natural laws to resolve a crises.
It is far better to live your life, tapping into God’s blessings, than to move from crises to crises, needing His miracles. Miracles are temporary, the blessings remain with us. Miracles tend to be enough to get you out of trouble while blessings operate to produce abundance. While we may all need a miracle sometime, they should not be our primary way of receiving, we should always be pressing into the blessings.
We can look to many examples of miracles in the Bible. We see Moses and the Israelites crossing through the Red Sea, we see the Israelites living on Manna in the wilderness, we see the walls of Jericho fall at the blowing of trumpets and shouting, we see Jesus turning water into wine and feeding thousands with two fish and five loaves.
Blessings are always spoken. God spoke His blessings over Abraham and we inherit these same blessings through Jesus.
Ephesians 1:3
Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ,
Galatians 3:13-14
Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the law, having become a curse for us (for it is written, “Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree”), that the blessing of Abraham might come upon the Gentiles in Christ Jesus, that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith.
Jesus fulfilled the Law of Moses on our behalf, thereby releasing all the blessing on us while at the same time taking all the curses of the Law on Himself so that we operate only in the blessings.
Abraham’s Blessing:
Genesis 12:2-3
I will make you a great nation; I will bless you And make your name great; And you shall be a blessing. I will bless those who bless you, And I will curse him who curses you; And in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.”
The Abrahamic blessing passed down from Isaac to Jacob:
Genesis 28:3-4
“May God Almighty bless you, And make you fruitful and multiply you, That you may be an assembly of peoples; And give you the blessing of Abraham, To you and your descendants with you, That you may inherit the land In which you are a stranger, Which God gave to Abraham.”
The blessings from the Law of Moses:
Deuteronomy 28:2-13
“Blessed shall you be in the city, and blessed shall you be in the country. “Blessed shall be the fruit of your body, the produce of your ground and the increase of your herds, the increase of your cattle and the offspring of your flocks. “Blessed shall be your basket and your kneading bowl. “Blessed shall you be when you come in, and blessed shall you be when you go out. “The Lord will cause your enemies who rise against you to be defeated before your face; they shall come out against you one way and flee before you seven ways. “The Lord will command the blessing on you in your storehouses and in all to which you set your hand, and He will bless you in the land which the Lord your God is giving you. “The Lord will establish you as a holy people to Himself, just as He has sworn to you, if you keep the commandments of the Lord your God and walk in His ways. Then all peoples of the earth shall see that you are called by the name of the Lord, and they shall be afraid of you. And the Lord will grant you plenty of goods, in the fruit of your body, in the increase of your livestock, and in the produce of your ground, in the land of which the Lord swore to your fathers to give you. The Lord will open to you His good treasure, the heavens, to give the rain to your land in its season, and to bless all the work of your hand. You shall lend to many nations, but you shall not borrow. And the Lord will make you the head and not the tail; you shall be above only, and not be beneath, if you heed the commandments of the Lord your God, which I command you today, and are careful to observe them.
All the blessings above are ours through faith in Jesus Christ alone. Just as we received Jesus through faith, we appropriate the blessings of God through faith. We must plant God’s promises deep in our hearts, where they become our only truth. Our faith is the bridge whereby the blessings of God pass from the spiritual into the natural world around us. Through faith we receive what God has already done for us.
As blessings are spoken, we must be careful on how we speak over our lives. When we say negative things over our lives we are speaking against the Word of God and we interrupt the blessings of God in our lives. We should always speak the promises of God out over our lives.
Proverbs 18:21
Death and life are in the power of the tongue, And those who love it will eat its fruit.
James 3:10-12
Out of the same mouth proceed blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not to be so. Does a spring send forth fresh water and bitter from the same opening? Can a fig tree, my brethren, bear olives, or a grapevine bear figs? Thus no spring yields both salt water and fresh.
